“A home for dignity, a farm for sustainability.”

"Every elder has a voice that must be heard.”
Health is the foundation of dignity, yet in rural Tharaka Nithi, most elderly live with unmanaged chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and vision loss. These conditions go untreated due to the high cost of medication, poor access to healthcare facilities, and lack of regular check-ups.
Through the BHECO Wellness & Medical Screening Program, we conduct regular outreach health camps that bring essential medical care closer to the elderly. Our program includes:
Blood pressure & blood sugar screening for early detection of life-threatening conditions.
Vision checks to identify preventable blindness.
Referrals & follow-ups with county hospitals for cases requiring advanced care.
Health education sessions teaching caregivers and elders about nutrition, hygiene, and chronic illness management.
We work with volunteer medical professionals and community health workers to ensure care is compassionate, accessible, and consistent. By empowering the elderly and their caregivers with knowledge and early intervention, we reduce suffering and restore hope for healthier, happier golden years.
Hunger strips away dignity, and sadly, many elderly in Tharaka Nithi face days without a proper meal. Some are left to survive on tea and a piece of bread, while others rely on neighbors’ kindness. Malnutrition not only weakens their bodies but also accelerates disease, despair, and isolation.
Our Dignity & Nourishment Program ensures no elder is left behind in the fight against hunger. We distribute nutritious food packages consisting of maize flour, rice, beans, cooking oil, and salt. Alongside food, we provide dignity kits that include warm blankets, soap, and personal hygiene items.
This program goes beyond physical nourishment—it’s about restoring the elderly’s sense of worth. When they receive a food basket and dignity kit, they know they are seen, valued, and loved. It also reduces the burden on elderly caregivers who often look after grandchildren left behind by their parents.
Through this initiative, we provide more than food; we deliver hope on every doorstep.
The dream of BHECO Home Care is to build a safe, welcoming home for the elderly—where they can live with dignity, receive care, and never face loneliness again. Thanks to the generous donation of 3 acres of land by our Chairman, Franklin Mwathi, this dream is becoming reality.
On this land:
2 acres will host a modern elderly home with comfortable housing, recreational areas, healthcare units, and spiritual care spaces.
1 acre will be dedicated to an organic farm that produces fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs, ensuring food sustainability and reducing dependence on donations.
This flagship project will be a model of climate-smart, community-rooted elderly care in Kenya. Elders will benefit from daily companionship, regular medical supervision, and nutritious meals. The organic farm will not only feed them but also empower them to participate in light gardening activities, keeping them active and connected to the land.
The Home of Hope represents our ultimate vision—a place where elders find family, health, and joy in their golden years.
Cold nights in Tharaka Nithi are harsh, especially for elderly men and women sleeping in mud huts or iron-sheet houses without bedding. Many wrap themselves in sacks, worn-out clothes, or old mats. This exposes them to pneumonia, arthritis flare-ups, and sleepless nights.
Through the Warmth & Comfort Campaign, BHECO distributes Maasai shukas, blankets, and warm clothing to vulnerable elders. Each clothing is more than fabric—it is a shield from the cold and a gesture of love from the community.
When an elder receives a clothing, their smile says it all—it’s as if they have been wrapped in dignity and hope. This campaign not only warms their bodies but also rekindles their faith in humanity. It reminds them that they are cherished members of our community, not forgotten souls.
Too often, the elderly are excluded from decision-making, stripped of their property, or mistreated by those who should protect them. Many suffer in silence, afraid to speak out.
BHECO’s Voices of Wisdom Program is dedicated to amplifying the voices of the elderly and ensuring their rights are protected. We engage in:
Policy advocacy to push for stronger protections for elderly rights.
Community dialogues that raise awareness of elder abuse, neglect, and exclusion.
Legal support referrals for elders facing inheritance conflicts or exploitation.
Intergenerational forums that connect youth with elders, preserving wisdom and bridging social gaps.
By advocating for inclusion and protection, we aim to create a society where elders are not marginalized, but respected as the pillars of wisdom and history they truly are.
Loneliness is one of the greatest silent struggles of the elderly. Many live in isolation after losing spouses or being abandoned by children. This isolation often leads to depression, despair, and a fading will to live.
Through the Adopt-a-Grandparent Program, BHECO connects volunteers, youth groups, churches, and local families with elderly persons in their communities. Volunteers commit to visiting, checking in, assisting with chores, and offering companionship. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sitting down to listen to an elder’s story or helping them fetch water.
These visits create intergenerational bonds that restore joy to the elderly and teach younger people the values of compassion, gratitude, and respect. For the elders, each visit is a reminder that they are not forgotten—that someone still cares deeply about them.
This program breathes life, laughter, and belonging back into their homes, proving that family is not always blood, but love.
